|New in SLIS
Welcome to an exciting new academic year!
In the 2017-18 academic year SLIS will begin to make progress towards the new strategic directions we have identified. We are rolling out two graduate certificates this year and preparing for our new doctoral program which will start next fall. The SLIS curriculum is incorporating new topics, ideas, and technologies as we embrace the changing nature of the LIS field, as well as continue to expertly impart the time-honored foundations of the discipline.
New Data Science Direction
SLIS is particularly expanding course offerings in the field of Data Science. In addition to ongoing courses in Data Mining, Information Visualization, and Database Design, this year we will offer new courses in Big Data Analytics and Text Mining.
Abbas and Team Receive Grant
Dr. Abbas is a member of a team of researchers from 3 universities (Wisconsin, Drexel, and OU) that received an IMLS 2017 National Leadership Grant for Libraries of $524,874. The universities will conduct research and develop screen media education training modules for public librarians working with parents and other caregivers of children ages 5 to 11 using interviews and surveys. The grant is centered at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
